Tips to Keep Your Paint From Cracking and Bubbling

Oct 21, 2020 | Painting Contractor

As a homeowner, the last thing you want to see is paint bubbling, cracking, or even peeling away from your walls. Paint cracking, bubbling, and peeling are all signs that the paint’s adhesion to the surface has become compromised over time.

The pros at Robinson Painting have put together some useful tips to prevent these types of common issues.

Why Does Paint Crack and Bubble?

Cracking and bubbling are usually caused by moisture, heat, or a combination of both. These factors can compromise the paint’s ability to adhere to the surface. For instance, it’s not uncommon to see paint flaking and peeling in bathrooms due to the water vapor and heat from shower use and poor ventilation.

Fortunately, there are measures you can take to prevent cracking as you prepare for your home’s next big paint job — and there are even ways to repair old, cracked, or peeling paint.

How to Prevent and Repair Damaged Paint

New Paint – Surface Preparations

Before a big paint job, be sure to choose a high-quality paint that will provide proper adhesion and flexibility over the life of your paint job. Be sure to check the labels or speak with a painting professional to ensure that your paint contains an adequate amount of pigment and adhesives with fewer solvents.

Poor surface preparation before the paint is applied can also contribute to significantly cracking and bubbling over time. Before painting, be sure to repair any cracks or holes, smooth out and thoroughly clean the surface. Then apply a primer that is appropriate for the type of surface you’re painting.

When painting, each paint coat should be evenly distributed, taking care not to spread the layers too thin. Let each coat of paint dry thoroughly before adding another.

Old Paint – Repairing Cracked or Peeling Paint

Finally, never try to simply paint over old damaged paint. To repair the cracking, bubbling, or peeling of old paint, you will first need to sand the damaged area. Remove any loose or flaking paint with a brush or scraper.

Be sure to feather out the edges, prime any bare spots, and fill in any other damaged areas before repainting the surface.
